Relationships and Health Education

Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is an integral part of your child's learning experience, designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to form healthy and respectful relationships, as well as understand their own health and wellbeing. This curriculum encourages open discussions about personal relationships, emotional literacy, and making informed choices in a safe and supportive environment. RHE is important in schools as it helps children navigate their social world, promoting positive behaviours and respect for themselves and others. By fostering understanding and communication, RHE aims to empower our children to lead happy, healthy lives, and make responsible decisions as they grow.

Intent: At Kerr Mackie Primary School, our intent for Relationship and Health Education (RHE) is to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to navigate their relationships and understand their own health and wellbeing. We aim to foster a safe and inclusive environment where children are encouraged to express their feelings, respect diversity, and develop empathy towards others. Our curriculum is designed to promote mental and emotional health, support personal development, and help students cultivate meaningful relationships with peers and adults alike.

Implementation: To achieve our intent, Kerr Mackie follows the You, Me, PSHE scheme of learning, which is the agreed Leeds scheme for RHE. This comprehensive programme is complemented by lessons from Pol Ed, providing a well-rounded approach to education. Through engaging lessons and activities, students learn about key topics such as relationships, health, safety, and emotional wellbeing. The integration of You, Me, PSHE and Pol Ed ensures that children receive consistent messaging and practical tools for making informed decisions in their lives.

Impact: The impact of our RHE programme is seen in the confident and knowledgeable children who understand the importance of healthy relationships and personal wellbeing. By providing a safe platform for discussion and exploration of these topics, we empower our students to make informed choices, leading to improved emotional resilience and social skills. As a result, our school community benefits from a positive atmosphere where respect and understanding thrive, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious school environment.

About Pol Ed: Pol Ed is an excellent resource for primary schools, as it offers a structured approach to teaching about personal, social, health, and economic (PSHE) education. The programme is designed to be age-appropriate and engaging, ensuring that children grasp essential concepts in a way that resonates with them. Pol Ed encourages critical thinking, decision-making skills, and the development of healthy relationships, making it an invaluable tool in preparing young learners for their roles in society. By incorporating Pol Ed into our curriculum at Kerr Mackie, we provide our students with the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in a diverse world.
