Together everyone achieves more.

Our Local Area

Our first geography topic in Year 1 was Our Local Area. We learnt about the physical and human geographical features in our area and our local landmarks.

Curiosity

In our curiosity lesson, we needed to explore the clues to find out what our topic was going to be about. In provision, we solved jigsaws with pictures of our local area.

“I go to Roundhay Park for picnics” SK

“That is so close to my house” AB

“That is the mosque my Dad prays at” HJ

“I’ve been there before” ST

There was also a jigsaw of Scarborough but we knew that was the odd one out because it isn’t in our local area.

“That’s Scarborough, we went in Reception” SH

“Scarborough was so far away.” CB

“We had to get a bus.” BM

We managed to solve the mission and we worked out that our local area is Oakwood/Roundhay.

Confidence

In our confidence sessions, we explored a range of key questions.

  • What country do we live in?
  • What city do we live in?
  • What is the name of our local area?
  • What local landmarks can you name?
  • Which human or physical features can you identify in our local area?

"We live in England." HS

"It's the biggest one." DM

"Our city is Leeds." AO

"Leeds is in the north of England." HA

Take a look at some of our photographs from our confidence sessions, including some photos from our local walk.

Challenge

For our challenge, Year 1 used natural resources we could find in the forest area to make one of our local landmarks.

"I've made Oakwood Clock." NEM

"It's Tropical World." IH

"We've made Roundhay Park. These are the ducks and this is the bridge." AS
