Our Local Area
Our first geography topic in Year 1 was Our Local Area. We learnt about the physical and human geographical features in our area and our local landmarks.
Our key learning questions:
- What is the name of our local area?
- What is the name of our city?
- What is the name of our country?
- What local landmarks can you identify?
- Which human or physical features can be identified in our local area?
Take a look at some of our photographs from our walk around the local area.
To launch our Geography topic we had a mission to complete! After playtime, Miss Brown and Miss Sowden showed us the mission letter that was left on their desks. It said "Mission! Work out the connection between these photos."
We managed to solve the mission and we worked out that our local area is Oakwood/Roundhay.
To inspire our curiosity further in our topic, we went for a walk around Oakwood and Roundhay. We spotted the landmarks we have been learning about.
- Roundhay Road
- Oakwood Clock
- Soldier's Field
- Roundhay Park
- Tropical World
- Canal Gardens
- Kerr Mackie Primary School
At the end of our topic, Year 1 become tour guides for our local area using all their new knowledge. Some children drew their own map of the local area, adding labels to each of the landmarks and key roads. Other children created their own tour guide leaflet where they wrote about two chosen landmarks within the local area.
