All About Space!
Our first History topic in Year 1 was Space. We learnt about two significant individuals involved within space history: Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison.
Our key learning questions:
- Who was Neil Armstrong?
- Who was Mae Jemison? Why was she so important in space history?
- How were Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison similar? How were they different?
During Transition Week, an unknown substance landed on our carpet. We did not know what is was or where it had come from. Here are some of our thoughts:
"Aliens are invading the classroom." DC
“The spaceship landed and the alien has lost his family so he came to the classroom.” AA
“It has come from alien school to visit like we have come to year 1 for transition day.” AH
Then, in September, to inspire our curiosity further, we used Now Press Play to explore Neil Armstrong's journey to becoming an astronaut and his journey to the moon.
"Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon. He went on Apollo 11!"
At the end of our topic, Year 1 directed and performed their own role play using the knowledge they developed over the half term. The children chose to act out either Neil Armstrong's journey to the moon or Mae Jemison's journey to becoming an astronaut.
RK (Mae Jemison), AY (teacher) and RA (pupil) acted out Mae Jemison's early life and experience at school.
AY: What do you want to be when you grow up?
RA: I want to be fireman.
AH: I want to be an astronaut.
AY: An astronaut? I think you should be a nurse instead.
AH: No I want to be an astronaut. I want to see Earth from space.
