Phonics provides the basis for how we teach our children to read here at Kerr Mackie Primary School.
To deliver Phonics, we follow the scheme Floppy's Phonics.
In Phonics, children are exposed to the letter/s-sound correspondences of the English alphabetic code. Children are taught the skills of blending to read and segmenting to write.
At Kerr Mackie, we use the reading routine 'spot the code, say the sounds and read the word' to support our children with reading.
We use grapheme lines and phonics fingers to support our children with segmenting to spell.
In Nursery, children begin at Level 1, developed through the use of music, environmental sounds and rhyme.
In Reception, children progress to Level 1+, Level 2 and the beginning of Level 3.
In Year 1, children continue with Level 3, Level 4 and 5. At this stage, children are introduced alternative ways of representing the same code (for example, ee and ea).
In Year 2, children consolidate Level 5.
